Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these particular card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were rough as he played many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.

The real improvement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would frequently challenge one another. He was able to access some of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world ever. He moved to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
