Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed betting on numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus attention even more on poker.

The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his strategic thinking skills. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. He moved to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
